Wind Turbine Delivery

Project overview

We successfully completed another oversized-cargo logistics project – arranging the delivery of 7 wind turbines from Amsterdam to the Port of Klaipėda.

The turbines were dismantled into 77 separate components, and three vessels were chartered to transport the full cargo volume. All vessels were received and represented at the Port of Klaipėda by TLC ship agents.

The project included not only sea transport but also handling, securing, weight-distribution and risk-management processes.

Challenge

Wind-turbine components are exceptionally large and heavy. In this project, one generator weighed as much as 51 tonnes, while the longest blades were approximately 34 metres.

Cargo of this type cannot be transported using a standard scheme – the position of each component on the vessel, weight distribution, loading sequence, securing method and discharge process must all be planned in advance.

Our solution

TLC organised the complete maritime logistics chain – from chartering suitable vessels to servicing them in Klaipėda.

We coordinated and supervised loading and discharge operations and advised the vessel’s crew and handling team on safe component positioning, securing and weight distribution on deck. Throughout the project, the actions of multiple partners and participants were coordinated.

We also performed a cargo risk assessment to identify potential hazards in advance and reduce the likelihood of damage and financial loss.

Result

All 77 wind-turbine components were successfully delivered from Amsterdam to the Port of Klaipėda on three chartered vessels.

Chartering, ship agency, cargo handling, securing and risk management were coordinated as one process. This enabled the large and heavy components to be transported smoothly and delivered safely.

Key project aspects

Transport of seven dismantled wind turbines was organised from Amsterdam to the Port of Klaipėda.

The turbines were dismantled into 77 separate components, each requiring an individual loading, securing and weight-distribution plan.

Three vessels were chartered to transport the complete cargo volume and were received and represented at the Port of Klaipėda by TLC ship agents.

The heaviest components weighed up to 51 tonnes, while the longest parts – the wind-turbine blades – were around 34 metres long.

A cargo risk assessment was carried out before transport to reduce the likelihood of possible damage and financial loss.

Wind turbine and project cargo logistics

Wind-energy logistics requires individual planning and experience with oversized cargo. Every solution depends on component dimensions and weight, port infrastructure, handling possibilities, vessel type and the final route.

TLC organises sea transport for wind turbines, their components and other non-standard and project cargo, including vessel chartering, agency, cargo-handling coordination and risk assessment.
