Why Store Cargo Closer to Klaipėda Port When Importing?

In Lithuania today, there is a great deal of discussion about improving efficiency, intense competition and reducing costs – yet sometimes the solution is close at hand.

Companies importing cargo through the Port of Klaipėdastill often choose to store goods in Kaunas or Vilnius and distribute them from there throughout Lithuania or even further afield. But is this really the most efficient option? A customer example shows that warehousing in Klaipėda can help reduce total import-logistics costs.

Warehousing in Klaipėda: a customer example

We use the example of one 20-foot container containing 20 pallets.

Total costs include port handling, delivery of the container to the warehouse, container unloading, approximately one month of storage, loading the goods onto inland transport and final delivery to the consignee.

When stored in Klaipėda, these logistics costs total approximately €1,136 + VAT. A comparable service in Kaunas costs about €1,484 + VAT and in Vilnius about €1,590 + VAT. Compared with the Vilnius scenario, warehousing in Klaipėda reduces total costs by up to approximately 29% in this example.

Why does the price difference arise?

The reasons are quite straightforward:

  • In Klaipėda, moving the container from the port to the warehouse costs around €140, whereas transporting it to Kaunas or Vilnius makes this leg significantly more expensive.
  • Warehousing and onward distribution costs are similar across the different cities, so the largest difference comes from transporting the cargo from the port to another city.

When distribution costs do not differ significantly but the additional movement of a container from Klaipėda to another city creates extra expense, warehousing closer to the port can be a simple way to optimise the entire chain.

What does this mean for business?

Storing imported goods in Klaipėda can avoid some unnecessary kilometres and their associated transport costs. This is particularly relevant for companies that regularly import containers through the Port of Klaipėda but later distribute the goods to different regions of Lithuania. In such cases, warehousing in Klaipėda can become not only a warehouse choice but a way to optimise the entire logistics chain.

Optimising a logistics chain does not necessarily mean a complex redesign of processes. Sometimes it is enough to reconsider where goods arriving through the port are stored.

Efficiency and sustainability

This logistics logic becomes even more important as transport costs rise and businesses seek more efficient and sustainable solutions.

Fewer unnecessary kilometres mean not only lower costs but also a simpler supply chain and greater flexibility when planning distribution.

Summary

The question is not merely where warehousing is cheaper. It is how efficiently the entire logistics chain from the port to the final consignee is designed. If cargo arrives through the Port of Klaipėda, it is worth comparing not only the warehouse price but all costs associated with container haulage, cargo handling, warehousing and final distribution.
